Agitator Gearbox
This gearbox is from a paper pulp agitator in the dump chest.
There was little knowledge on this gearbox and the date of it's last overhaul was unknown. That said, it definitely hadn't been touched in the last 30 years.

Prior to overhaul it had a bad oil leak which resulted in oil contaminating the very expensive paper pulp.

The first 2 photos clearly show the poor condition of the internals of the gearbox and the poor standard of lubrication.

The gearbox was totally stripped and thoroughly cleaned.
There was age related wear to the worm wheel but it is good to keep turning for the next 50 years.
New seals and bearings were fitted and appropriate shimming took place.

The gearbox was filled with fresh lubricant and returned to service.

The bottom 2 photos show the rebuild in progress with new bearings along with a photo showing the completed rebuild with new tyre coupling fitted.
The gearbox was not painted due to time restraints.

With the success of this rebuild, the sister gearbox in the "Machine chest" was completed 4 months later.
