Boiler access platform

The access to the Crown valve above the steam generation boiler was a fairly regular occurrence.

Previously this had been achieved via a ladder and then clambering all over the insulation jacket.

Clearly this practice needed immediate improvement.

I was asked to provide an access platform of sorts without the need for vertical legs that would obstruct maintenance to other critical items in this area.

There was little to work with other than the lifting eyes on the boiler itself.

I utilized these by turning up some heavy steel bushes that I then welded to the construction.

The entire platform was measured and constructed on the bench. Confident that it would fit I even painted it on the bench prior to assembly on the boiler.

Come the day of fitting, I'm so glad to say that it went together perfectly.

It looks good and more importantly it provides safe access for the guys who need to access the area above the boiler.

The completed platform offers great access to the crown valve and other components that were previously inaccessible.

Further access provided by the platorm to various valves, pressure transmitters and water level transmitters.

The Yellow painted area highlihts the joining point of the platform. Notice one of the turned bosses used to fix the platform to the boiler.
